Classical herbal sudation therapy that opens the channels, loosens toxins and prepares the body for Panchakarma.
What Is Swedana?
Swedana is the classical Ayurvedic therapy of induced sudation through medicated steam or localised herbal poultices. It is both a stand-alone therapy and an essential companion to Abhyanga in Purvakarma — the preparation phase before the main Panchakarma cleansing procedures.
The Classical Rationale
Warmth opposes the cold, dense qualities of aggravated Kapha and the dry, cold qualities of Vata. Swedana softens the tissues, opens the channels (srotas) and mobilises toxins loosened by prior oleation toward the digestive tract for elimination.
Classical Indications
Swedana is classically associated with:
- Stiffness and chronic pain of Vata origin.
- Ama-related conditions, obesity and heaviness.
- Respiratory heaviness and Kapha congestion.
- Preparation for Vamana, Virechana, Basti and other main karmas.
How Swedana Is Traditionally Performed
Common methods include Bashpa Sweda (whole-body medicated steam in a specialised chamber), Pinda Sweda (localised bolus with rice and herbs), Patra Pinda Sweda (leaf bolus for joint disease) and Nadi Sweda (localised herbal steam). The vaidya selects the method according to the individual and the intended goal.
Precautions
Swedana is avoided in pregnancy, in bleeding disorders, in acute infection or fever, in severe cardiac disease and in significant dehydration. Temperature and duration are always monitored.
Frequently asked questions
What is Swedana therapy?
Swedana is classical Ayurvedic induced sudation — through medicated steam or localised herbal poultices — used both as a stand-alone therapy and to prepare the body for Panchakarma.
Why is Swedana done after oleation?
Oleation (Snehana) loosens deep-seated toxins; Swedana then softens the tissues and opens the channels so the toxins can move to the gastrointestinal tract for elimination.
Which conditions is Swedana used for?
It is classically indicated in Vata-type stiffness and pain, ama-related conditions, obesity, Kapha congestion and as Purvakarma before Panchakarma.
Is Swedana the same as a sauna?
No — Swedana uses medicated steam or herbal boluses with defined temperature, duration and technique, chosen for the individual and condition.
How long is a Swedana session?
A typical session lasts 15 to 30 minutes and is commonly repeated as a course.
Who should avoid Swedana?
Pregnancy, bleeding disorders, acute fever, severe cardiac disease and significant dehydration are contraindications; suitability is decided by the vaidya.
