A continuous rhythmic stream of warm medicated oil poured over the forehead to settle the nervous system.
What Is Shirodhara?
Shirodhara is a classical Ayurvedic therapy in which warm medicated oil, or a herbal decoction, is poured in a steady, rhythmic stream over the forehead — traditionally over the region of the ajna marma — for a defined period. It is one of the most widely used supporting therapies within a Panchakarma programme.
The Classical Rationale
Sustained rhythmic warm-oil contact over the forehead is classically held to pacify aggravated Vata and Pitta in the head region, calm the nervous system and settle disturbed sleep and mood. Its effect is felt both locally and systemically.
Classical Indications
Shirodhara is classically associated with:
- Chronic insomnia and disturbed sleep.
- Stress, anxiety and mental fatigue.
- Migraine and tension headache.
- Hair fall and scalp disorders.
- Hormonal imbalances linked to the head region.
- Convalescence and neurological rehabilitation.
How Shirodhara Is Traditionally Performed
A specialised wooden vessel (dhara patra) suspended above the forehead delivers a slow, continuous stream of warm oil at a defined height. The therapist maintains a rhythmic sway across the forehead for 30 to 45 minutes. A short rest and gentle head wipe follow.
Precautions
Shirodhara is not performed during acute cold and fever, on broken scalp skin or immediately after meals. The oil temperature and vessel height are carefully controlled by the therapist.
