Panchakarma Virechana Therapy in Indore

Classical therapeutic purgation to eliminate excess Pitta and toxins from the liver, gallbladder and small intestine.

What Is Virechana?

Virechana is the second of the five classical Panchakarma karmas — a supervised therapeutic purgation. Classical purgative preparations (Triphala, Trivrit, Avipattikar and castor-oil based formulations) are administered after adequate Purvakarma to cleanse the seat of Pitta: the liver, gallbladder and small intestine.

The Classical Rationale

Pitta, when aggravated, accumulates in the small intestine and manifests as heat, inflammation, acidity, skin eruptions and hepatic complaints. Downward expulsion through the digestive tract (adho-marga) is the classical route to eliminate this excess safely and thoroughly.

Classical Indications

Virechana is classically associated with:

  • Chronic skin diseases — psoriasis, eczema, urticaria, acne of Pitta origin.
  • Jaundice and other liver disorders.
  • Chronic hyperacidity, GERD and reflux disease.
  • Migraine and Pitta-type headache.
  • Diabetes, thyroid and hormonal imbalances.
  • Piles and inflammatory bowel conditions.

How Virechana Is Traditionally Performed

  1. Deepana-Pachana strengthens agni before therapy.
  2. Graded internal oleation with medicated ghee for several days.
  3. Herbal sudation to mobilise toxins into the gastrointestinal tract.
  4. Classical purgative medicines are administered under supervision on the appointed day.
  5. Post-therapy Samsarjana Krama gradually rebuilds digestive fire.

Precautions

Virechana is a physician-supervised protocol. It is not appropriate in pregnancy, in severe debility, in acute infections, in significant dehydration, and in several other specific conditions. Suitability is determined only after a full Ayurvedic assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What is Virechana therapy?

Virechana is the classical Panchakarma procedure of supervised therapeutic purgation, used to eliminate excess Pitta and toxins from the liver, gallbladder and small intestine.

Which conditions is Virechana used for?

It is classically indicated in chronic skin disease, jaundice, hyperacidity, GERD, migraine, diabetes, hormonal imbalance and certain hepatic conditions — decided individually.

Is Virechana safe?

Performed by trained Ayurvedic doctors after full assessment and proper Purvakarma, Virechana is a time-tested classical procedure. It should never be self-administered.

How long does a Virechana programme take?

The complete cycle usually spans 8 to 14 days, including preparation, purgation and the graded recovery diet.

Is Virechana the same as taking a laxative?

No. Virechana is a defined medical protocol with prior oleation, herbal sudation, precise dosing and a graded recovery diet — not a single-dose purgative.

Who should avoid Virechana?

It is contraindicated in pregnancy, severe debility, acute infection, significant dehydration and several specific conditions. A vaidya evaluates suitability.
