Medicated enema — classically described as half of all treatment (ardha-chikitsa) and the primary therapy for Vata disorders.
What Is Basti?
Basti is the third of the five classical Panchakarma karmas — the administration of medicated oils (Anuvasana Basti) or herbal decoctions (Niruha Basti) into the colon in a defined therapeutic sequence. Classical Ayurveda describes Basti as ardha-chikitsa — half of all treatment — because of its wide reach through the Vata-governed nervous, musculoskeletal and reproductive systems.
The Classical Rationale
The colon is the principal seat of Vata. When Vata is aggravated, it drives dryness, stiffness, pain, neurological and reproductive complaints. Delivering warm medicated substances directly into the colon settles Vata at its source and re-establishes normal function throughout the body.
Classical Indications
Basti is classically associated with:
- Sciatica, lumbar spondylosis, disc-related pain and chronic backache.
- Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis of Vata origin.
- Paralysis, hemiplegia and neurological rehabilitation.
- Chronic constipation and IBS-Vata pattern.
- Male and female infertility of Vata origin.
- Chronic fatigue, insomnia and neuromuscular complaints.
How Basti Is Traditionally Performed
Basti is delivered as a defined regimen — a Yoga Basti course of 8 days, a Kala Basti course of 16 days or a Karma Basti course of 30 days — alternating Niruha (decoction) and Anuvasana (oil) enemas in a specific sequence prescribed by the vaidya. Every day is preceded by warm oil massage and steam.
Precautions
Basti is a physician-supervised medical procedure. It is inappropriate in acute abdominal disease, severe diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, advanced pregnancy and certain other conditions — suitability is decided at consultation.
Frequently asked questions
What is Panchakarma Basti therapy?
Basti is the classical Panchakarma procedure of administering medicated oils or herbal decoctions into the colon in a defined sequence, primarily used to pacify aggravated Vata.
Why is Basti called half the treatment?
Classical texts describe Basti as ardha-chikitsa — half of all treatment — because its influence extends across the Vata-governed nervous, musculoskeletal, digestive and reproductive systems.
Which conditions is Basti used for?
It is classically indicated in sciatica, chronic back pain, arthritis, paralysis, chronic constipation, IBS, infertility and neuromuscular disorders.
What is the difference between Anuvasana and Niruha Basti?
Anuvasana Basti uses warm medicated oil; Niruha Basti uses a herbal decoction. Panchakarma programmes typically alternate the two in a specific sequence.
How long does a Basti course take?
A short Yoga Basti spans 8 days, Kala Basti 16 days and Karma Basti 30 days. Your vaidya selects the appropriate course.
Is Basti safe?
Yes, when performed by trained Ayurvedic doctors after full assessment. It should never be self-administered.
