The three doshas shape everything from your digestion to your emotions. Learn which one leads yours — and how to keep it in balance.
In Ayurveda, everyone is born with a unique blend of three biological energies — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — collectively called doshas. Understanding your dominant dosha is the first step toward personalised health.
Vata — air and space
Vata governs movement — breath, circulation, thoughts, elimination. Vata-dominant people are usually slim, quick-thinking, creative and energetic. When aggravated, they experience dryness, anxiety, insomnia and bloating.
Vata-balancing tips
- Warm, cooked, oily food
- Regular routine and early bedtimes
- Sesame-oil self-massage (abhyanga)
Pitta — fire and water
Pitta governs digestion, metabolism and intelligence. Pitta types are medium-built, sharp, focused and ambitious. Out of balance, they feel heat, irritability, acidity and skin rashes.
Pitta-balancing tips
- Cooling foods — cucumber, coconut, sweet fruit
- Avoid hot sun, spicy food and skipping meals
- Slow, moon-lit evenings, coconut-oil massage
Kapha — earth and water
Kapha governs structure, immunity and stability. Kapha people are strong, calm, loyal and enduring. Excess Kapha shows as sluggishness, weight gain, congestion and low motivation.
Kapha-balancing tips
- Warm, light, spiced meals
- Vigorous daily movement
- Dry-brushing (garshana), less daytime sleep
